The Jabberwocky

The Jabberwocky is a beast from Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll. In the story Alice finds an account of the Jabberwocky in a book which she is only able to read after holding up to a mirror. The monster is described with vague attributes, such as with "Jaws that bite," "Claws that catch," and "eyes of flame." The illustrations by John Tenniel for the book in 1871 have remained the most popular interpretation of the creature.

Cheshire Cat

The Cheshire Cat is a character in the classic Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll. The cat appears frequently and engages Alice in bizarre conversation. He has the ability to disappear a piece at a time, and when the Red Queen orders him beheaded, escapes by making his body disappear.

The character is probably based on a specific type of cheese that was molded into a cat, which was made in Cheshire, England.
